Ch 9

Miguel snapped out of his hazy sleep when he felt Kay's hand on his shoulder.

"What?" He looked at Theresa and then his wife.  "What's going on?"

"Miguel let's go home.  You need sleep and Eve said that Theresa would sleep till the morning anyway."

"She shouldn't be alone." Miguel said.

"Luis went home to get some sleep.  He said he'd be back by midnight.  That's only a half hour away.  I don't think Theresa's going to wake up between now and then."

"But you don't know that.  I don't want her to wake up alone."

"I'm not gonna be able to change your mind on this am I?"

"No." Miguel smiled up at his wife.  "Kay I love you."

Kay smiled.  Even after almost five years those words still gave her as much of a thrill as the first time he'd said them.  "I love you too."

Gwen stared at Ethan in shock.  "What?" she finally managed to get out.

"I know it's a shock but it's the truth."

"Twin boys?" Gwen said as she slowly sat down.

"Yes." Ethan sat down next to her.

"Are you sure they're yours?  I mean did Theresa tell you they were yours?"

"No I ran into them earlier in the park well actually I just ran into Joshua but the timing fits and they look like me when I was a kid."

"But why wouldn't she have told you?"

"I betrayed her Gwen.  She probably found out right after she found us together."

"Is that how you look at it? A betrayal to Theresa?"

"Gwen I slept with you while I was still committed to Theresa.  Technically that was a betrayal."

"I'm sorry you feel that way Ethan."

"Gwen that's not what I meant."

"Then what did you mean?" Gwen asked as she stood up.

"I just meant that when I slept with you I was still with Theresa."

"Tell me something Ethan if we hadn't slept together or if Theresa hadn't found out would you two still be together?"

"I don't know."

"I think you do and I think you're still in love with her and if that's true then what are you doing with me?"

"Luis?"

Luis looked up when he heard Sheridan's voice.  He was sitting in the living room of their home holding his head in his hands.  "Did I wake you?"

"No.  But why are you up?"

"I'm going back to the hospital."

Sheridan sat down next to him.  "Why? So you can scare Theresa when she wakes up and finds you hovering over her making that face you make when you don't get enough sleep?"

Luis laughed a little.  "I just don't want her to be alone."

"Do you want me to come?"

"Could you do something else for me?"

"Anything."

"Would you get some sleep and then go to the Bennetts' and get the boys?  I want them here or at Miguel's from now on."

"Of course I'll get them."

"I love you Sheridan."

"I love you too."

Gwen sat in the living room of the Crane mansion curled up on a couch.  She had left Ethan asleep in bed about a half hour before and now she was just thinking.  As usual these days her thoughts were of what had been before they left Harmony.

"I want us to try again." Ethan said smiling at Gwen as she lay in the hospital bed.

"Ethan if this is about guilt then I don't want you here."  Gwen said trying to stomp out the hope that was rising in her.

"This isn't about guilt.  Gwen you were right.  We belong together."

"What about Theresa?"

"That part of my life is over.  So can we try again?"

"Of course we can Ethan." Gwen said as she threw her arms around him.

Gwen shook her head.  She should have known by the way Ethan had looked at Theresa the night Gwen found him and Theresa together at the cabin that he truly loved Theresa and not Gwen. But she had wanted to believe that Ethan could get over Theresa so badly that she was willing to fool herself into thinking that Ethan could be over Theresa.  But now when Gwen and Ethan were finally getting to the point where they were ready to be married Theresa had popped back into their lives once again and this time she wasn't alone.  This time she had something Gwen could never give Ethan.  Gwen shook her head resolutely.  Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald may have become a success but she was still poor house keeper's daughter from the wrong side of tracks and she was still the maid's daughter and this time Theresa wasn't going to win. Gwen was going to make sure of that.
