Theresa.
The name invoked a hatred that she never knew that
she could feel. A name that she has heard more times then she cared to
remember. A name that she was almost able to convince herself that she
would never hear again, until he said it again.
"Theresa."
Gwen watched Ethan turn on his back. For a moment
she was overwhelmed with love at the sight of him, but that love was quickly
transformed to anger at the thought of his betrayal, be it real or imagined.
When she first heard him moan Theresa's name on his lips her instincts
immediately told her to be on guard, that this was more than just a simple
slip on his part. But he swore to her that his slip meant nothing; that
Theresa was only on his mind because she had helped him. And she believed
him because she wanted to believe him. She allowed herself to be seduced
by his words of love.
She supposed that she always knew that this day
would come. After all she had turned down Ethan's marriage proposal because
she felt that it had come more from a sense of his own feelings that their
marriage was an inevitability, then it did from his love from her.
She thought back to when she first met Ethan.
He was dragging himself into the dorm all muddy and tired from his soccer
game. He had just made the winning goal and the smile on his face drew
her to him like a a moth to a flame. She knew who he was, all the girls
did, but she had never had the courage to talk to him. But that day she
caught his eye and he came over. They had been together ever since and
she had been happier then she ever thought she could be, but there was
always this nagging voice.
"Don't get to use to this Gwen you know it can't last"
She had imagined another snotty debutante catching Ethan's
eye or a glamorous model or actress winning his heart. Never in her wildest
dreams or nightmares did she expect to lose him to some mousy girl from
the wrong side of the tracks. It was almost as if God was playing a joke
on her and now the day of reckoning was here.
"Theresa" Ethan moaned again.
Gwen turned to look at him and brushed a piece of hair
from his forehead.
"Had he once dreamed of me like this?" she wondered.
But somehow she knew that he never did and that knowledge only made her
more desperate to hold onto him.
Before she can finish her train of thought Ethan woke
up. He smiled that smile that made her fall in love with him.
"Good morning," he said smiling. "God you're beautiful."
He leaned over to kiss her and whispered to her that
he loved her, that he needed her, that he couldn't live without her. She
returned his kisses even though she knows that his words were lies that
he didn't even know he couldn't mean. His heart already belonged to another.
But if Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald thinks she is just
going to hand Ethan over she has another thing coming. She would do anything
to keep Ethan and if Theresa wanted a fight she would get one that
she never will forget.
